Two exciting projects the "Sustainable Living Centre" located in the existing buildings at 131-169 Central Road, Nunawading and "McCubbin Walk" located at 1 Lake Road, Blackburn represent our main proposals for saving this area from inappropriate development. Further details are below..............
Sustainable Living Centre
The Project Vision
The Blackburn Lake Sustainable Living Centre and associated Bush Walking Trails and Bush Reserves will be a regional focal point for sustainable living education and activity in the Eastern suburban community.
Its design and that of the associated bush walking trails will be aimed at preserving and upgrading as much of the flora & fauna as possible so that a green corridor will be maintained in and around the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) school, linking it with the existing Blackburn Lake Wetlands.
The Project Dimensions
The Blackburn Lake Sustainable Living Centre Project will operate under the control of the existing Blackburn Lake management bodies to preserve, upgrade and develop the 5 Hectares of natural bushland and 2 buildings to be acquired at 131 - 169 Central Road, Nunawading.
Existing Buildings to receive a "Green Makeover"
The Project will incorporate the development of the following:-
The proposed Centre and Café will be based in the existing brick maintenance building and weather board house located on the South West corner of the SDA property.
No construction will be required under this project, the existing maintenance building will only require internal modification to accommodate the Sustainable Living Centre and Garden Café.
The Project Funding
The Project will draw funding from a range of sources including the SDA’s Public Open Space Contribution, Corporate sponsors and participating manufacturing businesses (under Community Business Partnerships), Philanthropic Groups and individuals via the Deductible Gift Recipient Fund, café management tender, concerned associations, as well as the traditional Federal, State and Local Governments.
The proposal aims to achieve financial self sufficiency and generate income for the council/community to maintain the surrounding Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and Wetlands.
